Virginia Contractor License Guide

To perform contracting work legally in Virginia, you must obtain a license through the Virginia
Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR). BNG Consulting is here

Choose Your License Class

Virginia offers three license classes based on project size and annual volume:


 Class A: Projects over $120,000 or more than $750,000 annually
 Class B: Projects between $10,000–$120,000 or $150,000–$750,000 annually
 Class C: Projects under $10,000 or less than $150,000 annually

Select Your Specialty

Apply for the specific work you will perform, such as: 

 

  •  Residential or Commercial Building

  •  Electrical

  •  Plumbing

  •  HVAC

  •  Roofing

  • (and more)

Meet Experience & Financial Requirements

License Experience Net Worth Required


Class A 5 years $45,000
Class B 3 years $15,000
Class C 2 years Basic financials

Designate a Qualified Individual (QI)

A Qualified Individual must demonstrate knowledge and pass the Virginia Contractor Exam
(not required for Class C).

Pass the Required Exams

  • Class A & B: Pass General, Virginia, and Advanced exams

  • Class C: No exam required

  • Exams are administered by PSI.

Submit Your Application

Include:

 

  • Business and QI info

  • Proof of experience and finances

  • Exam results (if required)


Submit online via DPOR portal or by mail.

Obtain a Surety Bond (if needed)

Required if financials don’t meet minimums for Class A or B.

Provide Insurance

License Minimum Coverage

 

  • Class A $1,000,000

  • Class B $500,000

  • Class C $300,000


Workers' Comp Insurance is also required if you have employees.

Pay Fees

License Application Fee

  • Class A $385

  • Class B $370

  • Class C $235

Background Check

Applicants must disclose any criminal history and may be subject to background screening.

Renew Every 2 Years

Keep your license active by renewing on time with updated documents and insurance proof.
